In terms of losses, the battle is regarded as one of the worst defeats in the history of ancient Rome. Roman losses are described as being up to 80,000 troops as well as another 40,000 auxiliary troops (allies) and servants and camp followers, virtually all of their participants in the battle. The terrible defeat gave Gaius Marius the opportunity to come to the fore and make radical reforms to the organisation and the recruitment of Roman legions. However, bitter differences between the commanders prevented the Roman armies from co-operating, with devastating results. Ranged against the migratory tribes of the Cimbri under Boiorix and the Teutoni under Teutobod were two Roman armies, commanded by the proconsul Quintus Servilius Caepio and consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus. The Battle of Arausio took place on 6 October 105 BC, at a site between the town of Arausio (now Orange, Vaucluse), and the Rhône River.wurde eine römische Armee, die Südgallien schützen sollte, in einer Schlacht bei Arausio, dem heutigen Orange in der Provence, von den Kimbern und Teutonen vernichtend geschlagen. Vstříc migrujícím kmenům Kimbrů a Teutonů pod vedením náčelníka Boiorixe byla vyslána dvě římská vojska, jímž veleli prokonzul Quintus Servilius Caepio a konzul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus. poblíž dnešního francouzského města Orange. Hopefully our photographs give some indication of the colour and realism of the reenactments. It was a fantastic opportunity for students of Roman history. We accompanied some of our visitors to the festival on Sunday 10 September. Over one hundred passionate amateurs reenact aspects of Roman life by paying tribute to the veterans of the second legion. September is a particularly good time to visit the theatre as it plays host over two days to a Roman festival.

It is well-known as the home of the summer opera festival, the Chorégies d’Orange. The structure was restored in 1869 and the theatre is now owned by the municipality of Orange. It is one of few Roman theatres which still retains the back wall – the Scaenae frons – at the rear of the stage. Listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, the theatre is the most well preserved Roman theatre in all of Europe. It served the Roman colony of Arausio, established by the soldiers of the second legion.
